Navratan Dal (Blend of 9 pulses)

Step 1

Ingredients

  • Urad dal (split black gram) – 2 tbsp
  • Kali urad dal (whole black gram) – 2 tbsp
  • Chana dal (split chickpea) – 2 tbsp
  • Masoor dal (split red lentil) – 2 tbsp
  • Kali masoor dal (whole red lentil) – 2 tbsp
  • Green moong dal (green gram) – 2 tbsp
  • Yellow moong dal (split green gram) – 2 tbsp
  • Toor dal (pigeon peas) – 2 tbsp
  • Mutter dal (spit peas) – 2 tbsp
  • Salt – as needed

Preparation

Soak all the above ingredients for 1 hour. You may use any other pulses of your choice. Cook them in a pressure cooker by adding 3 cups of water. The pulses will get cooked by 2 to 3 whistles.

Step 2

Ingredients

  • Ghee/oil – 2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
  • Cumin seeds – ¼ tsp
  • Dried red chilli – few
  • Onion – 1 no (medium, finely chopped)
  • Ginger-garlic paste – 1tsp
  • Coriander powder – 1 tsp
  • Red chilli powder – 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
  • Tomato – 1 no (medium, finely chopped)
  • Green chilli – 2 to 3 nos (chopped)
  • Curry leaves – few
  • Asafoetida – 1 pinch
  • Garam masala – ½ tsp
  • Kasuri methi – ½ tsp
  • Salt – as needed
  • Lime juice – 1 tsp
  • Coriander leaves – handful (finely chopped)

Preparation

In a heated pan add oil/ghee, when the oil is hot, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. When the seed starts to pop add few dried red chilly and saute for few seconds. Now add onion, Ginger-garlic paste and saute till light brown. Add coriander powder and saute for few seconds. Then add red chilli powder, turmeric powder and saute till fragrant. Now add tomato, green chillies , curry leaves and saute till tomatoes are cooked and mashed well. Add the cooked dal, asafoetida, garam masala, kasuri methi , salt if needed, curry leaves and mix well. You can add more water if needed to adjust the consistency of the curry. Cover and cook over for few minutes. Then add lime juice, coriander leaves and mix well. Serve with roti, rice etc…
